Rectal Carcinoma

Classical Leak Test for the colo-rectal anastomosis is done by placement of non-crushing clamp around 10 cm procimal to the anastomosis, followed by insufflation of the air by an Aspeto Syringe introduced per rectally after filling the pelvis with sterile normal saline. A leak is indicated by bubbling through the saline.

The other procedures that should be done for testing the leak from the colo-rectal anastomosis is to check for the complete dough nut in case of stapled anastomosis and to do Digital rectal examination (DRE) to feel for the integrity of the anastomosis.
